A few tips for your easy vocation here!
Why is St. Maarten so popular?
St. Maarten is a vibrant island in the Caribbean known for its unique blend of Dutch and French culture, stunning beaches and lively atmosphere. This dual-nation island offers visitors an array of activities and attractions, from thrilling water sports to serene beaches and rich cultural experiences.
The weather – when is the best time for a visit.
Visiting StMaarten/StMartin from mid November till the end of May could be particularly sweet. You’ll experience the pleasant weather that the winter season is known for (mid-70s to low 80s on average) and very little rain.
Official beginning of the hurricane season is June 1, but dramatic storms are not happening until September.
From June till the end of August the weather cooperates, with highs in the mid-80s, rain showers are more common, but there’s little chance of a mild storm.
Hurricane Season
Be aware of the hurricane season, which generally runs from June 1st to November 31. This means that majority of the hotels and resorts are closed, so are the restaurants for the months of September and October. This is the vocation times for the local people and businesses.
Passport and Return Ticket
You’ll need a passport to travel to most Caribbean islands, and proof of a return ticket is required.
Language(s)
English is widely spoken on both Dutch and French sides of the island. Spanish is very common on the Dutch side as well.
Safety
While most crime is concentrated in specific areas, it’s always a good idea to research safety tips for the specific island you’re visiting.
St. Maarten is generally safe for our guests, however, don’t leave valuables unattended on the beach, lock your car, and avoid isolated areas after dark.
Currency
St. Maarten uses two currencies: the Netherlands Antillean guilder (NAƒ) on the Dutch side and the euro (€) on the French side.
But don’t stress over conversions—both euro and U.S. dollars are accepted on both sides, in shops, restaurants, taxis, and tours.
Take some smaller bills with you, many local vendors, especially beach bars and markets, may not have change for large bills.
ATMs are available but sometimes have long lines or higher withdrawal fees.
The power of being polite
Politeness comes in many ways – be on time, say “please and thank you”, appreciate people around you.
On every Caribbean island “good morning”, “good afternoon”, or “good evening” is a must to start a conversation.
During the day dress codes are casual island-wide, but beachwear should stay at the beach when entering shops and restaurants. Locals appreciate respectful, friendly engagement. “no shoes, no shirt, no service” expression didn’t come from nowhere! 😊
Taxi
There is a line up of the comfortable taxi vans. They do not have time/distance meters, but they dohave friendly and helpful drivers. Usually, the cost of the drive to your hotel will not be higher than $40, but all depends on the number and the size of your luggage J
Luggage
Travel light –less to worry about. Puck your favorite Insta-worthy swimsuits and reusable water bottle, and the rest you can buy here. You will find funky cheep T-shirts and hats in Philipsburg, reef-safe sunscreen and flip-flops, too.
Be eco-friendly
StMaarten does not recycling system. Please, be mindful of plastic packaging and disposable stuff, as well as “bandaids” and make-up. Please, help us to keep our corner of Paradise clean!
Do not make assumptions
Just come to the island with open mind and without expectations, and you will be pleasantly surprised!
